Mentoring Opens Doors for Emerging Leaders
We at the MODEL program believe youth can be empowered as lifelong learners and leaders through consistent, trusting relationships, academic support, and the encouragement of discovery. The MODEL Program is a year-round, comprehensive program aimed at addressing the academic and social needs of underprivileged youth from the fourth through the eighth grades in Daly City, CA. Our program is designed with the ultimate objective of helping our participants realize a safe, healthy, and open path to college and beyond.
We are proud to serve two schools in the Daly City Jefferson Elementary School District: Susan B. Anthony Elementary School and Thomas R. Pollicita Middle School.
Our services include: one-on-one mentoring, academic assistance, group workshops, field trips, and staff support.
Mentoring
Mentors are the stars of our program as they fulfill the crucial role of being unfailing supporters and encouragers of their mentees in their interests, successes, problems, and dreams.
Volunteer mentors come to our partner schools at least once a week to devote an hour of personalized interest to their mentees. The mentors have access to guidelines that allow for both natural relationship building and for meeting mentee development marks. Activities might include playing a board game, researching a new hobby, or going through a goal setting exercise together. Our participants look forward to this one-on-one attention all week long!
Academic Assistance
Participants who need help with their school work may attend our after school homework help sessions 3-4 days a week. Volunteer tutors help with both homework and subject tutoring. The use of this hour is encouraged not only for participants who are struggling in one or more subjects, but for all of our participants as a means of forming good study habits.

Group Workshops
Once a week, all of our participants come together to take part in a group workshop. This is an opportunity to address social and developmental topics relevant to our participants' interests and needs. We strive to keep the activities hands-on and self-discovery oriented so our youth take pride in their own development.
Some examples of what we cover:
*social development (i.e. communication, teamwork)
*personal development (i.e. anger management, goal settings)
*health and safety (i.e. preventing drug and gang involvement)
*future planning (i.e. college, career).
Field Trips
Every month, we take our participants and available mentors on an educational field trip in the area. Field trips are varied and we design them to be informational and entertaining for both mentees and mentors. The trips are a unique chance to expand the outlook of our participants in a way that extends beyond their daily activities.
Past activities have included:
visiting art, tech, and science museums
rock climbing
going to the zoo and aquarium
exploring a ranch
attending a ball game
participating in college tours
volunteering in the community
The field trips are an important component of our program as they inspire our participants to better understand the world and its opportunities.
